Repost @esntx2 ・・・📣 Big news: On June 27th, the Texas State Board of Education voted to renew the American Indian/Native Studies course by a bipartisan vote of 9-5!
This represents a significant step forward for the ongoing recognition of Native histories, cultures, and voices in our classrooms and for K-12 Ethnic Studies in southern and southwestern states.
Starting Fall 2025, all Texas school districts can adopt the course as a Social Studies elective, and students can earn graduation credit!
To offer the course in 2026–2027, school boards must adopt it by January 2026, but communities need to start asking for the course this summer. TEA will post the course on its website in July 2025.
In addition, the Texas SBOE can start considering the AI/NS course for TEKS-based adoption as early as September 2025 so that it can become a permanent Social Studies elective, without need for renewal every few years.
Swipe through the slides to learn what you can continue to do to support local and statewide adoption. See the bit.ly/AINSSupport Guide in our bio.
This is a community-powered win for all Texas students. Thank you!!

❌AB 715 comes directly from the Project Esther (companion to Project 2025) MAGA playbook, which is designed to dismantle pro-Palestinian advocacy within the United States by weaponizing false charges of antisemitism, attributing anti-Jewish discrimination and hate to actions and rhetoric that are not actually antisemitic.
❌ While 715 is being championed by Democrats in California, it employs the same intention and mechanisms to censor educational content when it comes to Israel and Palestine that MAGA Republicans have employed in red states to silence critical perspectives on race, sexuality and other controversial subjects.
❌ AB 715 expands beyond the focus of ethnic studies in the now-withdrawn bill it replaced, AB 1468, to encompass the entire K-12 educational system. While the bill is pitched as an effort to combat discrimination in the form of antisemitism in California public schools, the reality is that the bill’s authors seek to 1) stifle any criticism of Israel and 2) prevent teaching about Palestine within California public education.

Happy Pride! Ethnic Studies must be intersectional! ❤️

Repost Why are pro-Israel lobby groups trying to censor Ethnic Studies? Prof. Theresa Montaño (Cal State, Northridge) breaks down how efforts to silence discourse on Palestine are part of a broader attack on the field itself—and the BIPOC communities who built it. Ethnic Studies challenges systems of power by teaching histories of colonialism, resistance, and self-determination. Comments promoting violence or vulgarity will be deleted.

‼️NEW CALL TO ACTION - HELP STOP AB 715 ‼️
On May 14, the California Assembly Education Committee passed AB 715. It then goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee and if passed there, to the Assembly floor.
Bills must clear the Assembly by June 6, so please take some time to send emails, calls, and outreach to stop AB 715! Link in bio!
🛑 AB 715 is a blatant attack on racial justice, education and educators!
🛑 AB 715 is a thinly veiled attempt at vilifying open and accurate discussion of Palestine in our schools!
🛑AB 715 would amend the California Education Code to expand the definition of “nationality” to include perceived ancestry or religion tied to a country. This would conflate criticism of Israel with antisemitism, and thus facilitate banning books, articles and films that purportedly "promote discrimination” based on nationality or religion!

Repost @cair_sfba CAIRCA, @arocaction, @jvpaction, and other members of a statewide coalition strongly condemn the unanimous passage of AB 715, a bill that would concerningly expand the definition of “nationality” in California’s Education Code to include perceived ancestry, ethnicity, or even religious affiliation tied to a country, such as Israel.
The bill passed in a 9–0 vote during a special Assembly Education Committee hearing earlier today.
AB 715 is an assault on academic freedom that would open the door to punish educators who teach about Palestine, colonialism, or human rights abuses, simply because someone claims an offense tied to their national or religious identity.
